The guest speaker at the 2015 Bright Stars Award ceremony was Paralympic and Commonwealth guide runner, Mikail Huggins. Mikail is a guide for 25 year old athlete Libby Clegg who has a very rare condition called Stargardt disease. She has no central vision and only peripheral sight in her left eye, so can only see things at the side. Mikail runs alongside Libby connected by a wrist band.
On Wednesday 3rd June, the day arrived when our Blue Tit chicks flew the nest. We noticed that the bird box was looking a little empty compared to its usual busy hive of activity. On the off-chance that they’d be leaving soon, Mr Garfield had brought his camera in, just in case, to capture the moment when the birds flew the nest.
Q3 students are to take part in a charity competition to design a school for children in Northern Uganda. A team of budding architects will be put together to help design and plan a potential new building using natural resources from the surrounding Parabongo area.
A few weeks ago we reported the arrival of our latest arrivals at the Academy, a family of Blue Tits in our specially designed birdbox. Since then, 7 out of 9 eggs have hatched and we’ve been lucky enough to watch them grow rapidly over the last few weeks or so.
As many of you will be aware, progress on the development of our Peace Garden has taken far longer than we expected. We have encountered a number of setbacks, but we are now able to progress this project and we have also discovered a Community Fund, set up by AVIVA Insurance that might be able to support the cause, as we need to generate more funds.
Celebrity Chef, Paul Rankin (Ready Steady Cook, Great British Menu, Saturday Kitchen) dropped in to Q3 Academy to give students a culinary masterclass to help promote fresh, healthy eating on behalf of the Academy caterers, Sodexo. Not only did Paul teach the children, he then went on to prepare lunch and serve it for staff and students during lunch service.
The need for additional secondary school places in Sandwell has resulted in the opportunity for Q3 to expand its work to reach a larger number of students. The first building phase of the new Academy in Langley will be completed next year, allowing us to open in September 2016 with our first Year 7 intake. This is an exciting development for all stakeholders associated with Q3 Academy and will bring benefits to students and staff at both Q3 Academies, which we are determined will be centres of educational excellence in Sandwell.
Students at Q3 Academy will be getting involved with politics next week during the run up to the General Election. As well as a mock Downing Street set up in the Design Centre, students will be learning about each party and their manifestos throughout the week before finally having the chance to vote on Thursday 7th May at break and lunch time.
The Q3 Bird Box has been on site for over 12 months and has had the odd visitor, who we affectionately call “Bubo”, but over the last few weeks it has been populated with a nest and eggs! You can view the live webcam feed here.
