London 2012 Olympics & Paralympic Games
With the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games fast approaching Q3 Academy are getting excited. As a country we are proud to be hosting a global event where the attention and eyes of the world will be on our country.
Already we have witnessed the development of fantastic world class facilities which will provide a legacy for future generations. Socially deprived children will have the opportunity to engage and experience an international event right on their doorstep especially as international teams will be based in Birmingham.
The promotion of the Olympics and Paralympics within this country is inspiring everyone to get involved in sport. We are proud that our country will once again become a footnote in sporting history.
Q3 Academy has joined the Get Set network, which is part of the London 2012 website, so that we are able to access resources and updates. By being part of this network we will have the opportunity to join in the celebration of the Games and raise the profile of the Games and the Olympic and Paralympic Values within our Academy, to students, staff, governors and within the wider community. We hope to be able to share ideas and activities with other schools and learn from good practice.
Olympic and Paralympic Values
We have set up our own Olympic and Paralympic Committee amongst our Young Ambassadors to start planning out activities which will raise awareness of the Olympics and Paralympics within the Academy and the wider local community. These activities will be launched in January in the hope that we increase interest and participation in sport amongst students, staff and governors.
The Young Ambassadors have already led company assemblies for students based on the Olympic and Paralympic Values using the London 2012 promotional video and resources from the Get Set website.
As part of the Academy cultural celebration week, the Values were shared and discussed with students during their PE lessons and we also focused on the culture and society of New Zealand with students and staff even learning the Haka!
Future plans
We are determined to keep the momentum going at Q3 right up until the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and are planning to run some exciting activities linked to the Games.
As Q3 Academy has a specialism in Enterprise we are looking forward to running an Olympic-themed Enterprise focus week where students will take part in themed workshops focusing on the enterprise of London 2012.
We are also planning some cross-curricular themed lessons in the build up to the Games where students will learn about product design and advertising in the context of London 2012, cultures and societies of different countries competing and will use opening/closing ceremony performances for performing arts study. Activities are also being planned for starters, plenaries and in support of our Academy weekly reflection time.
We are already signed up for National School Sports Week so will use this week, and in particular World Sport Day, to focus on Olympic and Paralympic activities such as blind football and sitting down volleyball. Our Young Ambassadors and Sport Leaders will be working with students and staff at our cluster primary schools to create resources based on the Values to use at competition and festivals.
We also have plans to link up with an international school in the build up to the Games so that students could make pen pals and share their experiences.
Many more activities are scheduled to take place throughout the year and these will be shared via the Q3 Academy website and Twitter and Facebook websites.
