Year 9 Vs Wood Green Sports College

(League) [041011]

This was to be the first time that the Year 9 team had faced Wood Green, and excluding one district player in their squad they were an unknown entity. However, being a Sports College they were surely to be a decent team. The conditions in which the game was played were not ideal with a howling wind blowing the length of the pitch. Mr Hard's team talk prior to the start emphasised a need for the ball to be passed firmly along the floor, eliminating the effects of the wind. The game started poorly with the Year 9 team lacking their usual composure and professionalism. Players were regularly caught in possession, and aerial passes were over hit after being wind affected. However, the half was not without chances, Joey Taylor saw a shot drawn well wide and another easily saved by the keeper, and Harry Steel saw a volley also smothered by the Wood Green keeper. After some harsh words and Bluck and Ryan Vincent's introduction at half time, the Year 9 team came out stronger. Passing was much slicker, tackles in midfield were stronger and all players appeared to be taking the game much more seriously. Chances were now coming at regular intervals before Steel's cross come shot looped over the goal keeper into the net. The opening goal was just what the team needed and following this the flood gates opened. Callum Wright, Aiden McDermott, John Richardson all picked up two goals each, with Aaron Bluck scoring a single goal the score line emphasised that this was really a ‘game of two halves'. A strong second half performance clearly highlighting how well the team can perform when they work as a team.

Year 9 Vs Oldbury College of Sport (ESFA Cup)

[111011]

Q3 faced Oldbury in confident mood after the win against Wood Green. However, this was short lived when straight from the whistle it was clear that this would be a difficult game. Oldbury's tactics were clear from the outset. They came with two strong quick strikers and a player in defence who had a huge kick. With an organised centre back pair of Shipton and Nokes Mr Hard was confident that the Year 9 team would be strong enough to cope with the ‘long ball' ploy. This was definitely the case, with Q3 playing their usual passing game and getting into some dangerous positions but not quite getting the final break they needed. Then disaster struck after around 15 minutes of play, an Oldbury free kick aimed at the back post was tapped in past a floundering Alex Reynolds after unmarked players had run around the back of the Q3 defence. Q3 then struck right back within 5 minutes when Joey Taylor volleyed in a Callum Wright cross only to turn and see the linesman flag raised for offside. Aiden McDermott was deemed to be interfering with play by the Oldbury linesman. Nearing the half time whistle still a little dejected from the disallowed goal Q3's woes were compounded when the Oldbury striker latched on to a ball over the top of the Q3 defence and slotted in for a second. In the second half Q3 continued to plug away in their usual, methodical pattern of passing and were rewarded when Joey Taylor ran onto a through ball and cooly passed the ball passed the Oldbury keeper. The cup tie suddenly came to life. Q3 raised to tempo of their game and Oldbury seemed unable to match them particularly when John Richardson and Haden Donnery both fired goals from 20 yards. It was now a case of holding on to the narrow lead, with Richardson being replaced by Vincent after straining a hamstring and Oldbury increasing their attempts at the long ball. With several players struggling with the pace, it was inevitable that mistakes would happen and players not tracking runners saw an unmarked player drive the ball low into the bottom corner. Again this spurred the Year 9 team into action and for the second time in the game Donnery drilled the ball into the top corner of the goal from 25 yards. With 5 minutes remaining it looked like Q3 had the game won, when again poor marking off a corner and then again of an inch perfect cross saw Oldbury strike twice to steal the game 5-4. Q3 were clearly the better footballing side in this encounter, but lessons must be learned that marking is a key element in secure results.

Walton High Vs Year 9 (ESFA Cup)

[290911]

After a difficult league match against RSA the Year 9 team faced a long journey to Walton High in Staffordshire. The team seemed reasonably up beat despite missing a few players and several players nursing injuries. From the starting whistle, Q3 came out strong, with their passing game causing Walton problems. Harry Steel, filling in at left back was outstanding, being a constant outlet for Alex Reynolds in goal, and starting the attacks from a defensive position. It was Q3's full backs that were the difference, constantly creating space for the midfielders to play in. An attack that started down the left side , with good linking play between Steel, Taylor and Haden Donnery, ended with a ball breaking at the back post, where Callum Wright popped up to slot in his first goal of the season. The remainder of the first half saw Q3 creating chance after chance, through slick passing interplay, with only the Walton goal keeper preventing the score line changing. The second half followed the same pattern as the first with Q3 passing the ball well but not managing to create any decisive goal scoring opportunities. Walton made several changes to their personnel and were much more solid in the second half, but the Q3 defence remained resilient. The match appeared to be finishing with just the one goal separating the teams when Aaron Bluck pounced on a mistake the Walton centre back and rifled home sealing the game 2 nil. A great performance by the Year 9 team thoroughly deserving to progress through to the second round.

Year 9 Vs Wodensborough (League)

[20/09/11]

The first game of the new season saw the team facing Wodensborough in the league. Mr Hard stuck to his rotational policy in league matches by ringing several changes to give squad members a run out in the starting 11. Considering the team was missing 7 regular players, the team started strongly, taking the lead when Joey Taylor latched on to a Ryan Vincent through ball to chip a stranded ‘Wodo' keeper. However, inexperience showed as Q3 failed to convert some excellent possession, and then being caught time after time on the counter attack. 4 goals, 2 in each half, was enough to sink the Q3 team to their first defeat of the year.

RSA Vs Year 9 (League)

[28/09/11]

The Year 9 boys travelled to RSA with every intention of regaining some pride after last season's West Bromwich Cup defeat. However, with several players missing, a bare 11 players were always going to find it a difficult task. Whilst Q3 passed the ball well, creating decent chances, they were unable to really capitalise in front of the RSA goal. RSA struck first, only for Q3 to strike straight back moments after when Joey Taylor got his second of the season, slotting into the bottom corner. It was at this point that Q3 went down to 10 men as Ben Shipton was forced to leave the field with a Hamstring strain. The task was then just too much as Q3 began to concede goals at regular intervals. Eventually losing 4 - 1. The team should be commended for their efforts and a particular mention must go to Joe Nokes who was ‘solid' at the back and his organisational skills were outstanding, particularly when the team were down to 10 men.

Busy Season Ahead

[17012011]

It has been a very busy season so far for both boys and girls football at Q3 Academy. The programme of fixtures for all year groups has been full with games going on most weeks between September and December. The reason for the busy calendar has been largely down to the success of the teams and their managers.

Fixtures have been contested on 3 fronts; the English Schools Cup, the West Midlands Schools Cup and the West Bromwich Schools League fixtures.

All year groups have had some success in all competitions but a special mention must go to the Year 10 boys team, who narrowly lost in the 3rd round of the National Cup to Cardinal Newman of Coventry, a team they then beat the very next week in the West Midlands Cup, to reach the quarter finals. They are currently waiting to play the quarter final fixture against Sandwell Academy.

The Under 14 girl's team also deserve a mention, as they too are currently waiting to play a quarter final match in the West Midlands Cup. This is a team to watch out for in the future, with exceptional players including Francesca Orthodoxou and Courtney Reynolds.

Special recognition must also be given to the following players who have received representative honours this season:

Y7 girls' football - Wednesday 16th June

The newly formed Y7 girls' football team played fantastically at the Sandwell World Cup tournament at Sandwell Valley. We scored most points out of the group that we were placed in as "Australia" and conceded no goals. Therefore we then went on and played Perryfields in the semi final, where a 1-1 draw meant we had to play penalties. We scored all but one penalty, with Imara Coley saving two penalties as well as scoring our winning penalty to take us through to the final against Stuart Bathurst. Chloe Walker scored the only goal of the final, meaning that the girls were crowned World Cup champions!

The girls played tremendously well together and individually and thoroughly deserved 1st place. An excellent team performance.

Annual West Bromwich Schools Cup Final

Q3 Academy Triumph at West Bromwich Cup Finals

On Friday May 7th both of the year 7 and 9 Q3 Academy football teams triumphed at the annual West Bromwich Schools Cup Finals, held at the Hawthorns. After having beaten Wood Green in a tough Semi-final the Wednesday before, the year 9 team had tough opponents in the final against Sandwell Academy (year 9). The year 9's dominated the majority of the game with both Ryan Boothe and Jo Rowley producing some great attempts on goal in the first half yet to see the keeper save on both occasions. After the break Sandwell Academy grew stronger and crept back in the game with a spell of possession and shots on target, but goalkeeper James Pace and centre-backs Salo Sisso and Matthew Warner were equal to this with some outstanding saves and defending respectively.

The Game was coming to a close until Q3 Academy started to apply the pressure again through skilful runs from both Ryan Pace and Rehmane Gordon to bring the strikers into play. After a number of corners and mounted pressure on the Sandwell back four, 'Captain Marvel'; Ryan Pace whipped in a Giggs like corner and Ryan Boothe was able to beat the keeper to the ball first and put it into the back of the net, with all but 30 seconds to go, it was a fantastic ending to retain our trophy!

YEAR 7 FOOTBALL TEAM NEWS

‘Harry Steel's the Show'.

After a season of beating teams by the odd goal or 10, the Year 7 football team, scraped into the final of the West Bromwich School's Cup with a narrow 3 - 2 victory over Alexandra in the semi final. This meant that RSA were to be the opponents in the final, staged at W.B.A's ‘Hawthorns' ground. The first half was a nervous affair with both teams having large periods of the possession, on the huge pitch. With chances few and far between the only highlights coming from a long range shot by captain Hayden Donnery, and a solid near post save from goalkeeper Alex Reynolds.

Mr Hard attempted to calm the nerves and get the boys back passing play they were used to. The team talk seemed to do the trick, with wide players Joey Taylor and Callum Wright involved in much more of the play. Q3 continued to bombard the RSA goal for the rest of the half, with no success. However, as the officials were readying themselves for a penalty shootout, Jaden Mhende was brought into the action. His first act saw him run onto a perfectly weighted through ball, and charge into the box with 2 minutes remaining. Jaden then cut inside towards the goal, squared the ball delicately into the path of Harry Steel, who lofted the ball into the top corner of the net to seal the victory for Q3.
