If your child has been awarded a place at Q3 Academy Great Barr, firstly, welcome to the family! We’re really excited you’ll be sharing your learning journey with us, and we can’t wait to welcome you to our vibrant community!

Is your child feeling a bit worried about their big jump to secondary education? That’s completely normal. Episode 3 in our Ethos Team’s podcasts is all about the big move and how best to prepare, available here on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Amazon Music.

Hopefully you find the following timescale useful, so you know where we are in the transition process. Please be aware that some dates may change if information is delayed in being sent to us, we will endeavour to notify you of any changes where possible. The appeals process will run alongside this timescale, so the process may differ for students allocated a place late in the process.

Transition Timescale

March

We receive a list of the students initially awarded a place at the Academy from Sandwell Local Authority. Once we receive this information we start to receive files from primary schools. Owing to appeals processes and changes running alongside this, most files are not sent to us until late July.

Please don’t panic if it takes a while to hear from us, the admissions checking process often takes a long time.

June

We cannot wait to see you at Q3 Academy Great Barr for our New Intake Evening on Thursday 18th June 2026 at 4:30pm to formally welcome you to our community and share our ambition for your child’s learning journey with us. We’ll talk through absolutely everything you need to know transition-wise, and there’ll be an opportunity to meet the staff who will support your child through this process. You’ll also be able to discuss any individual needs that your child may have with the relevant staff.

July

We look forward to welcoming our new Year 7 students to join us at the Academy on Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd July 2026, 9:30am – 2:30pm. Sandwell Primary Schools are aware of this arrangement, if your child is joining us from a primary school outside of Sandwell, then please let them know about these days.

Your child may wear a comfortable, plain t-shirt, shorts/joggers, and trainers for these days. We encourage them to bring water to keep hydrated, and lunch is on us!

September Transition doesn’t stop in September, your child will have a Personal Tutor who’ll keep a close eye on how they’re settling in. Your child’s Personal Tutor is your first port of call for any enquiries at the Academy, and they’ll be in touch if there are any concerns.

Our uniform details can be found on the relevant page of our website here.

Please hold fire on purchasing any items of Sports Kit, as we are working with a new supplier with a view to making our Sports Kit more eco-friendly, sustainable, and cheaper for families to purchase. We will share further details at our New Intake Event in June.

Our wonderful SEND Team led by Ms Tromans (SENCo) and Ms Reardon-Allen (Assistant SENCo) can be contacted by email here.

If you have yet to confirm your child’s place at the Academy – if you have a question regarding admissions then you need to contact Sandwell Admissions. The Academy is unable to advise or support with the Admissions process as this is handled exclusively by the Local Authority. Contact details for Sandwell Admissions can be found here.

If you wish to appeal the place you’ve been offered – full details of the appeals process and contact details for the relevant teams can be found here.

If you have confirmed your child’s place at the Academy – if you need to get in touch with us about anything at all, you’d normally email your child’s Personal Tutor. However, until your child joins us and you’ve been introduced, you can contact one of the following:
