HAIRSPRAY – The Broadway Musical
Hairspray follows the story of Tracy Turnblad, an enthusiastic teenager desperate for a chance to shine on the ‘Corny Collins Show’. The prejudices of the time where appearance and race limit opportunities soon become apparent to her, and she embarks on a turbulent journey to fight for what is right – equality for all.
Students auditioned for the production in October 2018 and since then have been involved in a rigorous schedule involving rehearsals at the start and end of the Academy day.
Students are so excited to perform this fantastic piece of musical theatre that everybody has worked incredibly hard on. Year 12 student, Sophie, who is playing the central protagonist, Tracey, reflected: “I’ve loved being involved in this show and I never expected to be playing a lead role. I have also made some amazing friends whom I will cherish for a very long time. About half a year ago I didn’t even have the confidence to perform in front of my friends never mind a room full of people, but my incredible friends and Learning Consultants have got me through it, and now I’m more confident than ever!”
Performances are from Wednesday 20th March – Friday 22nd March at 7pm. Tickets are £7 and available from the Arts Company Office at Q3 Academy Great Barr. To purchase, please call 0121 358 6186 ext. 1278.
